Executives rejoice and prepare to once again to zip around the world breaking the sound barrier one country at a time. Thanks to the retirement of the trans-Atlantic Concord back in 2003, supersonic travel has all but died. However, a Nevada-based company, Aerion Corporation, is pushing at reviving the supersonic air travel business.
The Supersonic Business Jet can seat up to 12 passengers (a 50-seat version is in the works) and has speeds up to Mach 1.5 for more than 4,000 miles. Need to get to Paris from New York in a hurry? The SBJ can get you there in 4 hours and 14 minutes. Coast to coast travel in the US will take 41 minutes less vs. conventional aircraft but at a lesser but still entirely subsonic speed of Mach 0.98 due to sonic boom restrictions in the United States.
Projected to scream in the skies by 2014, Aerion already has $4 billion dollars in orders for this awesome aircraft. Others companies such as Cessna, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and the US’s Supersonic Aerospace International are also looking to get in on the supersonic jet action. Business will be (sonic) booming.
